How do you read a business credit report?
Business Credit Reports
Answer
Read a business credit report in this order: legal entity, source dates, financial trends, credit score and limit, payment evidence, then ownership and material events. Compare the findings with your transaction and existing exposure. A strong headline score cannot replace checking whether the report covers the right company and a relevant period.
Start with identity and the reporting basis
Check the country, registration number and status, then establish whether financial statements are standalone or consolidated. Read the currency, units and period end before comparing figures. A figure in thousands cannot be compared directly with a figure in millions.
- Separate report date, accounts period, filing date and assessment date.
- Compare several periods where available.
- Identify missing fields instead of substituting zero.
Turn observations into questions
Rising revenue with weak operating cash flow can prompt questions about receivables, inventory or payment timing. A lower limit can warrant an exposure review. A director change may require confirmation, but is not by itself proof of distress. The useful output is a documented conclusion and the evidence behind it.
Illustrative example
Fresh report, historical accounts
Illustrative scenario: a report generated in October 2026 includes accounts to December 2024. The report is newly generated; the financial evidence is historical. For a major new commitment, ask for more recent management information rather than describing the accounts as current.
What to check
- Identity and reporting basis
- Currency and units
- Trend and missing data
- Decision and unanswered questions
Frequently asked questions
Which section should I read first?
The legal company profile and identifiers.
Does the report date equal the accounts date?
No. They describe different events and should be shown separately.
What does consolidated mean?
The figures cover a group rather than only one legal company.
Is revenue the same as cash received?
No. Revenue recognition and customer cash collection can occur in different periods.
Does a score of 80 mean an 80% chance of payment?
No. Interpret the specific model’s definition and scale.
What does an empty field mean?
It may be undisclosed, unavailable, inapplicable or not collected; check the field definition.
Should I compare different reporting periods?
Only with care about period length, seasonality and accounting changes.
Are payment experiences comprehensive?
Usually not; review sample coverage and dates.
Can a parent’s financials substitute for subsidiary accounts?
They provide context but do not establish the subsidiary’s resources or a guarantee.
Where can I inspect the report layout?
Open the anonymised sample report linked from this page.
